So when Chanel recently treated me to what can only be described as a personal fragrance masterclass, I arrived curious, and I left with a renewed respect for a house that, for more than a century on, still knows precisely what it’s doing.
This is my review of the all-new 2026 Chanel N°5 Extrait — a fragrance I had the genuine pleasure of discovering.
First Impressions
The first thing that struck me was the complexity. This is a masterpiece, and it wears like one. On the nose, I immediately picked up ylang-ylang, aldehyde, bergamot and neroli — bright, effervescent, unmistakably N°5. Then, as it settled on my skin, the lily-of-the-valley lingered and slowly blossomed into a calming base of patchouli and vanilla. It’s a scent that makes the wearer feel soothingly rich, and I loved watching it evolve on skin over the hours — never static, always unfolding.
Why It Feels So Composed
Here’s what I think is really happening beneath the surface, and why this extrait feels so beautifully balanced.
The aldehydes — those sparkling, almost champagne-like molecules that have defined N°5 since 1921 — are the signature of this fragrance. In lesser hands they can read cold, sharp, even a touch soapy. Here, they’re cushioned and rounded rather than left to shout.
The ylang-ylang brings a creamy, custard-soft warmth that softens their metallic edge. The bergamot runs alongside them, keeping the opening luminous and juicy rather than waxy, so the whole top feels integrated rather than “aldehydes, then flowers.” As the fragrance deepens, iris and vanilla powder and warm the base, drawing the sparkle away from anything austere, while lily-of-the-valley threads a dewy, green softness through the heart.
The result is an aldehyde that shimmers rather than shouts — smoother, richer, more balanced, and impeccably blended. It’s the difference between brilliance and glare, and this extrait lands firmly on the side of brilliance.

Elegantly crafted and beautifully presented, the 2026 N°5 Extrait is an exceptional evening fragrance — and, to my nose, one that transcends the old lines of “for her” or “for him.” This is a scent for anyone who appreciates refinement as an attitude rather than an afterthought.
